Inspired by a recent visit to the René Magritte exhibition at the Pompidou center in Paris, #ARTANDBLING poses questions and reflects on the current zeitgeist with a focus on social media. A parallel is drawn to some themes explored by Magritte where he searched for answers to the question, “What’s revealed and what’s concealed?”
“Everything we see hides another thing, we always want to see what is hidden by what we see.”-René Magritte
Social media represents the present day ‘curtain’ which is drawn by the curator of the account in order to reveal or conceal what the curator chooses to disclose.
“The mind loves the unknown. It loves images whose meaning is unknown, since the meaning of the mind itself is unknown.” - René Magritte
Like Magritte’s curtains, the screen forms the visual obstacle between our eyes and the world, where it could be used to hide or reveal images the brain and the curator select to create or display.
